Pains and Gains in MCSE 2003 Testing Part 2
May 27th
Thank goodness! Finally I could breathe a sigh of relief. The Russian seated beside me decided to give up the examination and packed things away. Examination staff asked me whether to have the test or not? Test, of course. Anyway, I have scheduled the Second Shot.
The contents appearing the computer screen before the formal exam are indeed, to some extent, different from the previous ones, which made me a bit nervous. However, the moment I saw the first question, I became relaxed because it was familiar to me- the happiest thing in such an exam. There are 30 multiple choice questions and no experiments with a time limit of 100mins. It only took me 25mins to finish the test. To my appointment, the result turned out to be 880 points though I follow all the Testking answers exactly. So there must have been many mistakes in the question bank.
One examination left!
The current circumstance suggests that the Microsoft has started to update the exam questions. But in my opinion, it will take a long time to complete the whole process. As for those who have few examinations left like me, you’d better hurry up.
Oh my god! I passed the last exam by 973 points. Finally, I got my MCSE because I referred to the question bank of Pass4sure V1.8. There are 5 cases, 34 questions and no experiment in the examination with a 120 minutes’ time limit.
Definitely there are some differences in this exam. Firstly, the time limit of each case varies from 13mins to 30mins; secondly, when doing a case, you can look back to the original questions. But if you have submitted the last case, you cannot check and amend them again. Thirdly, after you have finished the question, don’t forget to confirm the end review then you can continue to the next. From my point of view, time is enough and I only spent 35mins
Then get prepared for CCNP. You have to fight harder before the victory
Certificate application
After the exam, the paramount thing is to apply for certificate. Since the Microsoft certificates are varied, you could refer to its website to check the certificates you could get after the exams. You can get the MCP certificate after any examination. As for the application of MCP, you can only finish that on its website. Moreover, you need MCP ID and Access Code to enter the system. According to Microsoft, you will receive the relevant Email in 2 weeks after you pass the exam. But many posts on the internet tell me many have never received such an Email. As a result, after 3 or 4 days’ wait, I decided to send an Email and they sent back to me with the MCP ID and Access Code within 1 day.
Firstly, browse its website at https://mcp.microsoft.com/authenticate/login.aspx then follow the steps to check your grade. [View My...-->Transcript]. As a usual, the Prometric will transfer your mark to Microsoft within 2 days. But there was also special circumstance when I got my mark of a certain exam in one week. If you get the mark and successfully pass it, go to Program Benefits–>Welcome Kits&Certificates and check your address and then submit the information. If it is the case, you will get the certificate in around 4 to 6 weeks. And it took me 21 days to receive mine.
Advice for preparation
To be simple, to pass the exam equals reading relevant books plus doing practical experiment plus efficient question bank.
Reading books
This is the basic knowledge needed for the exam. If you care only about the certificate, you could recite the question bank. As for my practice, I read them quickly and tend to grasp the point and key words
Doing practical experiments
I have also bought a computer to constitute one of the most small-scale networks with the original old one. In addition, I specifically doubly upgrade the old computer’s memory.
Recruiters overweight IT certifications
May 17th
75 percent of recruiters believe that IT candidates with additional qualifications stand a better chance of securing a job, according to a recent survey[1] undertaken by The IT Job Board – http://www.theitjobboard.co.uk.
This finding was also supported by the candidate response, where 84 percent of IT professionals consider that holding industry certifications will improve their employment opportunities. And, a massive 87 percent of techies believe that recruiters and hiring managers would look for additional qualifications when recruiting for jobs in IT.
When it came to the certifications most valued by IT professionals in the current market, 43 percent of techies cited Microsoft (MCSE, MCSA and MCT) on the hardware side, followed by 29 percent for Cisco CCNA and CCNP. With software applications, 25 percent believed that the Prince2 Certification was most important, followed by the ITIL Certification.
Alex Farrell, managing director of The IT Job Board, commented: “It is clear to see that both recruiters and candidates value certifications, and the fact that these can have a huge impact on peoples’ IT job opportunities.
She added: “During difficult times, when employment is harder to come by and the competition is fierce, holding additional IT certifications could be vital.”

Tips for Taking MCSE Adaptive Exam
May 15th
It is said that the adaptive exam is the major type of Microsoft’s examinations in the future. Therefore, the author introduces some skills of taking adaptive exam in detail here.
The quantity of the adaptive exam questions is not fixed; the questions are emerged dynamically with the basic principle is that the difficulty of the questions can be adjusted according to the case of questions answered before. For instance, if you do right a question, then the next question may be much harder, if you have done all the questions right, the difficulty will be increased all the time (of course, the total difficulty grade is that two or three, the most difficult one is just much flexible, but not the kind never seen or not knowing what is said). On the contrary, if you do wrong a question, then the next question will be much easier. And if the next question is right, the difficulty of following questions will be increased and so on. Such question model is based on the theory that if a candidate does a difficult question wrong, he cannot be considered as on a low lever, likewise, if he does right a simple question, he is not definitely on high level. Only in this way, from simple to difficult, can the candidate’s level be well calculated. Therefore, if a more difficult question comes out after answering a difficult one, then congratulations to you for the right answer of your previous question. Contrarily, if a simple question comes up, then you must have done wrong previous question. So if you do several simple questions continually, you must be careful. But there is no need to worry too much about it, since the adoption of adaptive exam score is relatively low, generally is between 550 to 600, and another chance will be given in the final if you really have done badly in all previous questions. However, turning back to previous questions is not allowed in this kind of examination. That is to say, you can not tag the unsure questions and leave them to the end. Each question has a NEXT button to the questions ahead but not a previous button to the questions before, which means you have to make the right judgment on each question. Anyway you must select an answer and once you click NEXT button, the answer will be submitted, can no longer be modified, so special attentions need to be paid on answering these questions. So far, the 70-067 exam is adaptive with examination time is 90 minutes and the admission score is 560 points.
Adaptive exam is a more advanced test method which has the most theoretical basis. From the above introduction, it is clear that adaptive exam can minutely separate the specific level of each candidate due to its own unique characteristics that having both simple and difficult questions among which the score of simple ones are out of line with those of difficult ones. If you do wrong a difficult question, you will lose up to 70-80 scores even if you do right on the next simple question (including the lost score of the difficult question that do wrong and the low score of a simple question whose score is lower than the average). Fortunately, the adaptive exam is quite considerate for the candidates since if you don’t get passed in the final, you will have another chance. Just as what have mentioned above, it has 25 to 35 questions and many candidates only do 25 questions for having get enough scores, so no more questions come out. Nevertheless, another case is you really have done a poor job on the previous questions, maybe your score cannot be passes when moving to the tenth question, but Microsoft will not put an immediate end to your examination until you have done 25 questions, so that you might think that the examination fee paid is worthy, or you will feel bad if you know you fail the exam in just 20 minutes. If your score is not enough but not so bad after having done 25 questions, then there will be the 26, 27…but the rule changes, just like the “sudden death” play off in football, which means that you must done all the questions correctly and you have to answer the questions one by one until your score has meet the criteria adopted. But if you do wrong a question, you will be out immediately, only to pity for the deer examination fee never to be called again. However, if the previous part really has been done poorly, then you will skittle out without the appearing of the 26th question. Undoubtedly, a person who has done badly on former questions can not do all the latter questions right. So it is in vain for these people to do the latter questions. In fact, the adoption of adaptive test score is relatively low, and one more question is enough if the score is not enough. Therefore, when you do the 26th question, you must be very careful, since it might decide your fate.
I came cross a very dangerous thing when taking the 70-067 exam. There was a multiple-choice question, and according to my past experience, I chose A and D without giving any further consideration. And after several questions, this question came out again, which let me feel so glad for encountering so easy question twice. Amazingly, when answering to the 27th issue, I encountered the same one again. I was surprised, and with calm and careful consideration, I realized that my previous choice was wrong, the right answer should be A and C. After handing out the answer, the result of the exam came out, just scraping through the adoption, which scared me a cold sweat. How dedicated the Microsoft was! I thing I am lucky. If it is not the same question, I will not pay attention. And although the result also came out after answering the 27th one, the bar showed on the screen would be red but not green.
The information above is just for your reference. Since the adaptive exam can assess the level of candidates more accurately, it may become the major type of examination of Microsoft in future. Hope to draw your attention!
My experience on MCSE exams
May 12th
I am half IT worker, why half? It’s because my job is about network maintenance, web site maintenance, web site maintenance, photographing, and so on. After half an year’s hard work( about 2 years working experience), I finished reading a foot high textbooks and coaching materials(the whole weight of them is more than 10 kilos from 7000 to 8000 pages), and now I’m about to get 0MCP+MCDBA+MCSA+MCSE.
Now let me talk about my exam sequences. The sequence that I arranged is: 70-215,70-210, 70-216,70-217. Because most of the questions in these exams are about windows network, I suggest that candidates take exams according to this sequence continually and the interval between each exam should be less than one month so that it will be easy for you to consolidate and strengthen the content you’ve got. When you prepare for 70-217, its content is half similar to that of 70-216.
The first exam is for candidates to practice and acquaint themselves with the Test Environment. Besides this, a Positive Mental Attitude can be developed in this exam and it influences on the candidates’ spirit in the following exams, therefore, you have to pass it in the first time. 70-219 is an integrated subject. Therefore you have to take it after you have finished reading all the textbooks and materials. After you finish the exams for MCSE,If you want to go for the work of database development or maintenance, you can take the exams of 70-210, 70-216,70-217,70-218,70-228,70-229,70-219 and get MCP,MCSA,MCDBA which is more useful than MCSE in database development and maintenance.
If you work on a large-scale distributed network, mere MCSE is not enough, for windows acts as client in such network. But when engaging in the work of the small and medium-sized database applications, SQL Server is the first choice. If you get MCDBA, you can get a good job such as job on the maintenance of management software. Please notice that: you’d better take exam 70-216 after you’ve studied for 70-210 &70-215 and made good preparations. Otherwise, you’re bound to fail unless you’re the specialist in using Microsoft products. Course 70-216 focuses in testing operating and managing the network basic construction of Windows 2000. The content it tests is more difficult than that of 70-210&70-215.
If you have passed the exam 70-210&70-215, you may have accumulated the practical experience in operating Windows 2000. But of course, most of people still have to focus on doing much studying and laboratory work so that you can improve yourself. The test about knowledge of network infrastructure includes a sharpened understanding of the network sever of windows 2000 and its operating principle: DHCP, WINS, DNS, IPSEC, CA and PRAS, all of them are the core content that run through the whole examination.
Meanwhile, you have to get some knowledge about the operation of sub-network. You have to read some materials on configuration of network protocol security and Authentication server. If you have mastered the content of server, you will understand the details of the operating system of windows 2000 and the basic knowledge of network server of windows 2000.
As for most of candidates, this subject 70-216 is the most difficult part in the way of getting MCSE, MCDBAM, MCSA. Therefore, you have to be more careful. The textbook that I use is MOC, and I feel that the wisdom of MOC is that it teaches a man to fish while not giving him a fish. If you want to pass exam 70-216, it’s far from enough to read only the textbooks, you still have to use its Practice Tests and Training Kit for reference.
Microsoft VS Cisco
Feb 2nd
Candidates always feel confused when facing with the two alternatives — Microsoft or Cisco, which will decide the development orientation. Therefore, on this subject, we write this article to explore this: choose certification for Microsoft or Cisco?
Recently most of the inquires are about how to hold the direction and which certification to choose. These inquires make me feel that a considerable proportion of candidates has no working experience in computer and network, or the job they do has nothing to do with computer or network, what they want is only to get a certification to lay the foundation of entering IT industry. So what to choose? I think your choice should depende on the technique that each of them stands for or the skill you get when you pass the certification exam.
Microsoft Certification
One of the features of MCSE is that it covers a wide field and applies to a large area. The content of MCSE almost covers all the main-stream network technologies in the modern society, from the hardware device in the underlying network to the technologies of high level, such as software configuration, routing technology, data encryption, public key, bridge of Application Servers, user management. Scope of application: After the candidates pass MCSE, they will get a concrete knowledge of the popular technologies in the field of computer and network. (but what they get is only of medium levels and they don’t go deep into the knowledge.) Therefore, as regards to getting a job, MCSE suits candidates who are about to do IT work while are not clear about the specific area to engage in.
Cisco Certification
Compared with MSCE, CCNA and CCNP focus is more specialized, they only go deep into certain narrow field, such as network device, router, switch. Therefore, the CCNA and CCNP will be of little use if the job you do doesn’t involve in this field. Scope of application: Cisco suits candidate who has nailed down his direction of his career life( his job must be connected to Cisco device), or it suits candidates who has get MCSE and still want to go deep. In my opinions, candidates can take the exam of MCSE if they decide to do job on the area of Cisco. While candidates should choose MCSE which is applicable to a wider range if they’re still not clear about their working direction.
Candidates universally acknowledge that Microsoft certification is about software development, programming and so on for Microsoft itself is a large software company. However, MCSE belongs to the field of system management and its major application is by using the operating system of Microsoft to perform system management, function realization such as WEB bridge, User Account Management, remote network link.
So why is the certification of software company not about programming and other things? Actually we can try to explain it this way. The purpose of every company that introduces certification is to promote its products. Therefore, certification is introduced to enable more people to use its products while not making people learn to program. Certainly Microsoft also has a kind of certification named MCSD which is approximate to software development, but in fact this kind of certification is also used to promote the development tools such as Microsoft VC&VB.
The 4 best Microsoft certifications
Dec 14th
IT certifications boast numerous benefits. They bolster resumes, encourage higher salaries, and assist in job retention. But which IT certifications are best?
Technology professionals generate much debate over just that question. Many claim vendor-specific programs best measure a candidate’s skills, while others propose vendor-independent exams are the only worthy way of measuring real-world expertise. Still other observers believe the highest-level accreditations — Microsoft’s MCSE or new Architect Series certification, Cisco’s CCIE, etc. — are the only credentials that truly hold value.
Myself, I don’t fully subscribe to any of those mindsets. The best IT certification for you, after all, is likely to be different from that for another technology professional with different education, skills, and goals working at a different company in a different industry. For that reason, when pursuing any professional accreditation, you should give much thought and care to your education, experience, skills, goals, and desired career path.
Once a career road map is in place, selecting a potential certification path becomes much easier. And that’s where this list of the industry’s 10 best IT certifications comes into play. While this list may not include the 10 best accreditations for you, it does catalog 10 IT certifications that possess significant value for a wide range of technology professionals.
Note: This information is also available as a PDF download.
#1: MCITP
The new-generation Microsoft Certified IT Professional credential, or MCITP for short, is likely to become the next big Microsoft certification. Available for a variety of fields of expertise — including database developer, database administrator, enterprise messaging administrator, and server administrator — an MCITP validates a professional’s proven job-role capabilities. Candidates must pass several Microsoft exams that track directly to their job role before earning the new designation.
As with Microsoft’s other new-generation accreditations, the MCITP certification will retire when Microsoft suspends mainstream support for the platforms targeted within the MCITP exams. By matching the new certification to popular job roles, as has been done to some extent with CompTIA’s Server+ (server administrator), Project+ (project manager), and A+ (desktop support) certifications, Microsoft has created a new certification that’s certain to prove timely, relevant, and valuable.
#2: MCTS
The new-generation Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) helps IT staff validate skills in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting a specific Microsoft technology. The MCTS certifications are designed to communicate the skills and expertise a holder possesses on a specific platform.
For example, candidates won’t earn an MCTS on SQL Server 2008. Instead, they’ll earn an MCTS covering SQL Server business intelligence (MCTS: SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence), database creation (MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Database Development), or SQL server administration (MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Implementation and Maintenance).
These new certifications require passing multiple, tightly targeted exams that focus on specific responsibilities on specific platforms. MCTS designations will expire when Microsoft suspends mainstream support for the corresponding platform. These changes, as with other new-generation Microsoft certifications, add value to the accreditation.
#3: MCPD
There’s more to information technology than just administration, support, and networking. Someone must create and maintain the applications and programs that power organizations. That’s where the new-generation Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) credential comes into play.
The MCPD accreditation measures a developer’s ability to build and maintain software solutions using Visual Studio 2008 and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. Split into three certification paths (Windows Developer 3.5, ASP.NET Developer 3.5, and Enterprise Applications Developer 3.5), the credential targets IT professionals tasked with designing, optimizing, and operating those Microsoft technologies to fulfill business needs.
A redesigned certification aimed at better-measuring real-world skills and expertise, the MCPD will prove important for developers and programmers. Besides requiring candidates to pass several exams, the MCPD certification will retire when Microsoft suspends mainstream support for the corresponding platform. The change is designed to ensure the MCPD certification remains relevant, which is certain to further increase its value.
#4: MCSE/MCSA
Even years after their introduction, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) credentials remain valuable. But it’s important to avoid interpreting these accreditations as meaning the holders are all-knowing gurus, as that’s usually untrue.
In my mind, the MCSE and MCSA hold value because they demonstrate the holder’s capacity to complete a long and comprehensive education, training, and certification program requiring intensive study. Further, these certifications validate a wide range of relevant expertise (from client and server administration to security issues) on specific, widely used platforms.
Also important is the fact that these certifications tend to indicate holders have been working within the technology field for a long time. There’s no substitute for actual hands-on experience. Many MCSEs and MCSAs hold their certifications on Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 platforms, meaning they’ve been working within the industry for many years. While these certifications will be replaced by Microsoft’s new-generation credentials, they remain an important measure of foundational skills on Windows platforms.
